At first glance, this short documentary film only has novelty value — old Chinese ladies form hip hop dance crew! In China! With a clever pun (The Wu Tang Gran, get it?!)

But if you look deeper, you’ll see that this is really about China’s sometimes painful, sometimes amazing, modernization process in the last 40 years or so. Most accounts of Chinese modernization focuses on the economic, but culture is just an important part of modernization. In this short documentary, you see the slow and uneven assimilation of “Western” culture — hip hop in this instance — into Chinese culture by people whom you would assume would be resistant, i.e., old people who lived through the Revolution.
